Panama as a tourism and film destination

The attractions of Panama have been highlighted in various films and series, whether for its paradisiacal destinations, culture, or even its coffee. Recently the Elida Geisha coffee made an appearance in a scene of the prestigious Netflix series, Billions.

Billions is one of the most-watched series on Netflix. It portrays a world with access to true luxury. In this context, the main actor offered a cup of Elida Geisha coffee, valued at USD 600.00, to another character, whose gesture denotes his satisfaction with the product.

Just for some context, Finca Élida’s coffee is one of the most exclusive in the world, and beyond its price per pound, it prides itself on being one of the most successful coffees in the World Barista Championship.

Similar to how the Geisha Café appears in this scene from the Billions series, Panama has had different appearances on the big screen, leaving the country in high demand for its resources, nature, culture, landscapes, and more.

And yes, it is true that Panama has been the main setting for many movies on the big screen for many years and now, for the very popular series produced by Netflix.

There is no question as to why: its unique and beautiful landscapes. Destinations such as the San Blas Archipelago, Bocas del Toro, or the charming Old Town (Casco Viejo) of Panama City. The ease with which you can move from one destination to another; the cultural contrast between modern infrastructures with huge skyscrapers and local traditions, and of course, the possibility of visiting the Caribbean Ocean and the Pacific Ocean in less than 1 day, are great attractions for the film industry.

For example, Suicide Squad 2 -one of DC’s superhero titles- was recently filmed in Panama City, Casco Antiguo, and Colón for a period of 3 weeks. The film grossed over $142.8 million worldwide.

Another highly popular series such as La Casa de Papel also had its time in Panamanian lands. Stunning views of a small picture-postcard island with sparkling white sand on the shoreline. It is the paradisiacal hideout in San Blas for Tokyo and Río, the leading couple of La Casa de Papel.

Between 2015 and 2020, Panama hosted around 300 foreign audiovisual productions, including documentaries, television shows, and movies. Contraband, El Sastre de Panamá, Prison Break, Quantum of Solace and Escobar are some of the foreign productions filmed in Panama.

Panamanian cinema is not far behind in exposing the potential of Panama. Recently the Panamanian film, Plaza Catedral, was the first in history to have reached the Oscars as a semifinalist in the category of Best Foreign Film.

Undoubtedly Panama is an attractive destination for thousands of tourists and visitors, even the film industry does not escape from enjoying and choosing Panama to explore all the attractions and show the beauty of its culture, nature, landscapes, and more.
