As Troy Vincent, the individual responsible for the layout and construction of the course, recalls, “The goal was to create a classic-style course suitable for all skill levels. We had to consider existing development during the routing process and wanted to incorporate the lakes and large trees into each hole’s strategy. Factors such as wind direction, vegetation, and the rainy season were crucial considerations. Considering the salinity within the water source, we felt it was imperative to cover the pitch with sand to allow for proper drainage and select the right grass.”
Thus, we have this 18-hole course with a total measurement from the professional tees of 7,324 yards and a par 72, respecting and integrating the natural environment to provide a high-level playing experience.
Over the years, the course has evolved with careful maintenance, hosting important tournaments such as the PGA Latin American Tour, the Lexus Panama Classic, and the Buenaventura Classic (2014 to 2016 and 2019).
Now, we asked the club’s professional to highlight five characteristics that make the Buenaventura course the best in the country (as ratified by international media):
- Every detail matters: Every aspect of the 18-hole course, spanning 7,324 yards from the professional tees with a par of 72, is meticulously maintained. Trees and water bodies play a vital role, and the greens feature significant undulations.
- The wind factor: The Buenaventura GC offers a unique playing experience influenced by the wind. The front nine is less affected, while the back nine is more exposed, providing a varied challenge.
- No easy pars: With large and undulating greens, merely reaching the green in two shots does not guarantee par, emphasizing the strategic aspect of the game.
- Hole 3: deceptively easy and stunning: Hole 3, a short par 4, appears straightforward, yet its picturesque setting and strategic layout make it a standout hole.
- Beware of Hole 5: Hole 5 presents an early challenge with its narrow fairway, out-of-bounds to the right, water to the left, and bunkers. It requires precision and strategy to navigate successfully.
Expatriates can enjoy the course in various ways, including special memberships offering exclusive benefits and participation in the Expats League. This tournament combines sports, gastronomy, and music, providing a holistic experience for the community.
