Provided with natural exuberant history, the most extensive natural sanctuaries spread through the coasts of Panama offer visitors a variety of locations with unique beauty. Due to their closeness to the coast, most of these sites can be reached by boat. Thus, it is important to understand their location and identity allowing any visit to the country to become an experience full of action and adventure.
- Boca Brava Island:
An important natural fortification in the western part of the Panamanian Pacific ocean, specifically in the Gulf of Chiriqui. It has a surface area of 30 square kilometers and amongst its main attractions is the presence of a coral reef named Bahía de los Muertos or Deaths Bay. It is connected to Palenque Island by a land bridge.
- Cañas Island (Los Santos)
It was declared a wildlife refuge on June 29th, 1994. Located at the southern part of the Azuero Peninsula, and is visited every year by a population of over ten thousand turtles who go to nest there. Another unique characteristic of the site are its beaches with black sand, rich in minerals such as iron and magnesium.
- Secas Islands
A group of eighteen islands of volcanic origins, located in the waters of the Gulf of Chiriqui. Due to their location, they provide their visitors a great view of the continental region. They currently serve as headquarters for a luxury eco resort with capacity for 18 people. Their waters are home to over 728 species of fish and 128 different plant genres.
- Pearl Islands Archipelago
Located in the interior of the Gulf of Panama in the southern part of the west Pacific ocean. One of the authentic natural sanctuaries in Panama that gathers a total of 39 islands and more than a hundred islets. Its biggest island is Contadora, and today it has exuberant infrastructure that has long characterized it.
- Iguana Island
Located 4.7 kilometers from the coast of the Azuero Peninsula. Different to others of its type, this island is purely from volcanic origins. Currently it attracts an important number of investigators from all over the world. It is also a haven for over 5000 species of birds.
- Coiba Island National Park
Found in the archipelago with the same name, 25 minutes from the city by airplane, in the waters of the Gulf of Chiriqui. It refers to a World Heritage protected site since 2005. Coiba Island has a total of 493 square kilometers of abundant jungle with a biodiversity that surpasses 1450 plant species.
In the Gulf of Panama waters you can also find Taboga Island, an important reference point in the history of figures such as Francisco Pizarro and Diego de Almagro. It is also pertinent to mention other natural sanctuaries in Panama such as Punta Chame, San José, Viveros, as well as Saboga Island and Rey Island.
