Discover Panama’s summer gastronomy

Panamanian gastronomy is certainly delicious and varied. It is characterized by plenty of dishes that reflect the different cultural influences that left their mark in Panamanian burners, along with modern and cosmopolitan touches in certain occasions.

It is a complete experience to enjoy the delights that Panamanian gastronomy offers, with fresh ingredients, from both sea and land. Here we will give you a tour through some delicious options for you to enjoy the gastronomy during your trip this season.

Breakfast

Fruits

One of the biggest pleasures that Panama gifts its visitors is the possibility to start the day with a delicious and colorful fruit platter.

Bananas, pineapples, papayas and other exotic fruits such as caimitos, soursop and medlar are some of the options that you can find when enjoying a breakfast full of tropical energy.

Surely, you can also enjoy fresh fruit at any time during the day and it will help you fight the heat and thirst, either in small pieces or in fruit juices made from any of the incredible variety of fruits that can be found in Panamanian land.

Traditional Breakfast

On the other hand, if for breakfast you prefer something more consistent, do not fret, you will find multiple options that will surprise you. For example, corn tortillas, accompanied with cheese and meat stews.

Another nutritious breakfast is patacones: these are simply fried plantains accompanied with meat, chicken or cheese.

Entrees

Ceviche

Seafood has a special place within Panamanian gastronomy. Among the multiple dishes that can be prepared with the hundreds of options found in Panama’s oceans, the ceviche has a place of honor when talking about this niche.

Although it is common to find this dish in other countries in America, it is a must to go have it at the Fish Market in Panama City. Located close to the Casco Antiguo, you can enjoy different stands that offer delicious ceviche and of course other seafood dishes.

For those that are unaware of what a ceviche is, it is simply pieces of raw fish or seafood, macerated in lemon or lime juice accompanied with crackers.

Sancocho

The Panamanian sancocho is another dish that cannot be missed within the gastronomical route. It is a soup that clearly identifies Panama.

A classic sancocho is prepared with hen meat, seasoned with cilantro, oregano, onion, garlic and vegetables. After the meat is softened, you add ñame, a type of root vegetable original to most humid regions. This root vegetable adds a special flavor to the soup which is then accompanied with some rice.

Rice

Likewise, rice is one of the most popular dishes in Panama: it can be found on local tables around the country almost daily. One of the most popular ways to eat it is rice and beans, a very rich and nutritious dish.
