The accidental geography of Panama is a gift and creates unique landscapes, especially when discussing beaches. The country has thousands –yes, thousands– of beaches throughout its land.
Only as a reference, Panama has around 1,500 islets, which provide unique and unrepeatable landscapes. Plus, the coasts on both the Pacific ocean and the Caribbean sea create enough spots for anybody to spend a season discovering all the beaches that Panama has to offer.
We decided to make a small list of the top ten beaches that are widely visited by international tourists so you can have some references for your next visit.
1. San Blas
One of Panama’s most famous destinations. Over 365 islands and islets spread across the archipelago and yes, the pictures that will come up in your browser correctly portray the beauty of the place.
Coral reefs, turquoise water, white sand, gastronomy, culture and so much more that make it the perfect place for an adventure that you will not regret.
2. Crawl Cay (Cayo Coral)
Located in Bocas del Toro, it is famous for snorkeling and scuba diving. Coral reefs with crystal water and a variety of tropical fish surrounded by dense mangroves make it a unique and heavenly place.
3. Zapatilla Island (Cayo Zapatilla)
Also located in the Bocas del Toro archipelago, it was the perfect scenario to film a complete season of Survivor. Legend has it that the islands were formed when God stepped on Earth and this is why it has the shape of a shoe.
One of its main attractions is the presence of sea turtles.
4. Farallon
The perfect place for people looking to enjoy the beach while not being far from the city. Located approximately 90 minutes from the center, it has luxury amenities such as golf courses, marina, and restaurants. The most popular hotel is The Buenaventura Golf and Beach Resort.
5. Coiba Island (Isla Coiba)
A natural paradise designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. It still has 80 % of its natural rainforest and it is one of the most visited places by scuba divers due to the variety of stingrays, whales, and hammerhead sharks that can be spotted.
6. Pearl Islands (Las Perlas)
At only 48 kilometers from Panama City lies the Pearl Islands Archipelago that has 39 islands and 100 islets. With tropical weather, it is an ideal beach for those that want to have an active visit and go on hikes, kayaks, biking, or snorkel. It is also a good destination for fishing.
7. Playa Blanca (Colon)
Another beach that is relatively close to Panama City. An incredibly calm beach with clear and warm water. You only need to arrive in Portobelo, another world heritage, and take a boat to your destination.
8. Isla Iguana
Located in the province of Los Santos, this wildlife refuge has white sand beaches and beautiful coral reefs. It is a sanctuary where humpback whales and dolphins can be seen as well as other mammals.
9. Venao
Not only is it attractive because of its beauty, but also because it is the epicenter for surfing in Panama. The ideal spot for those who wish to explore the country with their board.
10. Taboga
If you are in the city, simply reach the Amador pier (where you will also see the Panama Canal entrance) and take a 20-minute ferry to the group of islands that can be seen from the city. Taboga is a charming town full of history.
